The root resection is the surgical method by which a tooth or a (root or marginal) periodontitis-affected root remainder is recovered and it is indicated when the other methods of treatment have failed.
The reconstruction operation is the election method for periodontal cases with horizontal and/or vertical bone defects requiring addition materials. Thus teeth can be recovered displaying 1st degree (sometimes 2nd degree) mobility, isolated iatrogenic periodontal bags can be cleared up, and extended bone atrophies are approached on groups of teeth and this reconstruction surgery is applied.
The implant consists of an artificial root, which is surgically introduced into the bone, and a prosthetic stub, which is fitted up at 4 or 6 months (depending on the evolution of the osseointegration) and which shall constitute the support of the following prosthetic appliances.
